The Open Online Theatre Arts/Tech Residency was a 16 week residency from October 2024 to April 2025, where we explored hybridity, sensography and XR storytelling through live performance, motion capture, storytelling across mediums, across audiences in spaces physical, digital and in-between, and exploring interactivity as an approach to bridge the relationship between audiences and performers, to discover radical new ways of creating and experiencing narratives.

The IJAD Resideny was structured in four phases. The first phase was in Nottingham, at VIP Studios in University of Nottingham. In the first week, we had full day sessions where we explored various aspects of immersive storytelling. The core was movement and body, and the sessions on 'Sensography' were rooted in finding the center of gravity, and exploring the idea of the body and self in imagined spaces, and expanding the relationship of the body to embrace the fluidity of space, time and scale. The sessions with Clemence, Displace Studios and Richard helped to dive deeper into this ethos, and as artists-in-residence, we embraced creative development (and the occassional creative despair with the hundreds of aspects of the technologies), and explored each other's creative practice with collaborative intent.
The structure of the residency overall was -
Week 1 Train, Week 2 to 5 Experiment, Week 6 to 11 Develop, Week 12 to 15 Refine, Week 16 Conclude
Performance at OOT Fest 25
The second phase of the residency at LCF explored Unreal engine, alternate ways of motion capture, (AI, Markerless MoCap), Unreal engine procedural environment building, photogrammetry and the idea of a digital 'twin' in more detail.
The third phase of the residency returned to LCF where the sessions on movement, sound, live streaming and bringing performances together for an audience were all explored. This session was also a good lesson in how many things can go haywire on the day with tech, and troubleshooting was a key learning.
The final phase of the residency gave us a day to freely explore, and think upon how to bring together all these learnings, work with projections, interactivity and performance. This concluded the residency journey, and we got the callout to apply for the OOT Festival.
