On 2nd October, 2021, climate activist Pushpanath Krishnamurthy (Push) launched his epic walk, from London to Glasgow. Across one month, he travelled 650 kilometres (approximately a million steps) to reach COP-26, the UN Climate Conference. ‘A Push for Peace’ is the film made by his co-travellers Janmejay Singh and Dhira Chakraborty, and it chronicles Push’s journey.
Beyond the incredibly challenging march across the beautiful nation, the film encapsulates the exhilaration of meeting young leaders, climate activists, government representatives, faith groups, school children and innumerable people who are affected, directly or indirectly, by the Climate Emergency. Push has spent his life travelling across more than 40 countries as a popular campaigner for Oxfam, and his work focuses on the poor, especially women, who are hit by the climate crisis “First, Worst and Hardest”. But while Push tells the stories of disaster, he tells there is hope.
We collected over 1500 letters from young people across the UK, addressed to climate leaders at COP26. Some of these were sent to Alok Sharma, head of COP26 via Danny Sriskandarajah (director of Oxfam UK in 2021), and other letters were handed to Lord Goldsmiths, UK Member of Parliament
The GoPushGo walk was both a strong campaign where we rallied and lobbied for the voice of the global south, especially the women and children, and yet it was also a pilgrimage towards realising our own resolve to do what we can in the face of insurmountable challenges and powerful financial lobbies. As we walked, we discovered hope, resolve, and a new generation awakened and ready to claim the world back, to nurture and preserve it, to sustain and cherish it, and rise to face the climate emergency.
